Organizational History

The Jeff Davis Legion, 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion, Company B (originally part of Captain Winn's Company, 1st Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Battalion) was also known as the Liberty Mounted Rangers. The company spent twelve months during 1862-1863 on James Island, near Charleston South Carolina, until it was ordered to Virginia in early 1864. After its officers, Colonel John B. Millen and Major W.G. Thompson were killed at Hawes Shop on 28 May 1864 the surviving members of the battalion were split up and attached to depleted regiments already officered. Company B of the battalion became Company C of the Jeff Davis Legion, Young’s Brigade, Hampton’s Cavalry commanded by Colonel Fred Waring.
